Professional football players are rewarded substantial amounts of money for playing the entertaining yet violent game of football. For many high school and college players, the risk is worth the reward, the reward being the potential millions a player can earn in the NFL.

The real risk of playing football can manifest itself not at the professional level,but at the high school level where young teenage players are subjected to violent hits that can hamper their physical and mental development. According to the Center for Disease Control, almost 2 million adolescent players suffer from brain injuries every year. Another scary statistic by the CDC points out that as much as 80% of concussion related injuries are undiagnosed, meaning that it is likely there is a silent epidemic among current and former players.

A concussion, according to Jonah Lehrer of Wired,”is not a bruise. It is not a sprain. There is no bodily metaphor for what happens when the Jell-O of cortex accelerates into the skull. Although the brain is surrounded by a cushion of cerebrospinal fluid, a severe impact or abrupt change in head speed can push those three pounds of meat straight through the fluid, so that it crashes into the cranium.”

Just imagine how it would feel if you got hit by a vehicle moving at a speed of 20 mph. That’s the level of impact a player can receive when hit by an opposing player(s). High School football is at the epicenter of the concussion epidemic because these brain injuries can interfere with the mental development of teenage players. Depression, headaches, memory loss, and blurred vision, are just some of the effects of head trauma that can impeded a players mental and physical growth.

In October, a high school football player in upstate New York died after receiving a violent hit during play. ” An ambulance took the player to a hospital, and he was being transferred to a large medical center in Syracuse when his condition deteriorated. The ambulance turned around, but doctors were unable to save the the student’s life.”

A Purdue study on high school football players show that head related injuries are difficult to detect and aren’t as obvious until a brain scan is done on the athlete- meaning that many players may have suffered injury without even knowing it.  Severe head injuries can alter brain function leading to memory loss, headaches, and other symptoms. Purdue researcher Eric Nauman believes that football helmets are good at protecting against head fractures, however there not as good in protecting against concussions, according to Slate.com.

Severe injuries like concussions are difficult to diagnose increasing the chance that players can suffer long-term effects of their injuries well after the end of their careers. The equipment used in high school, college, and professional levels need to be fitted with the most advanced materials and cushioning systems that can reduce the risk of severe injury during play.  The right equipment can make a big impact when combating the concussion epidemic in organized football

Steve Jobs once said ” being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful, that’s what matters to me.”

Steve Jobs was a man who had a vision for the kind of products he wanted to produce for consumers. He has been called many things: visionary, genius, titan of industry, but Steve Jobs will be remembered as a man who simply wanted to change the world.

The death of Steve Jobs has put into perspective just how amazing Jobs was. Steve wasn’t concerned about impressing focus groups, he wanted to create products that he loved and enjoyed. He was more of an artist than a tech designer.  Today the world is better off because of Steve Jobs. His products have changed the way we live, communicate, and do business. Many companies, including our own, owe Steve Jobs a debt of gratitude for making products that make doing business easier and more efficient.

With all the problems in the world, we could certainly use more men like Steve Jobs to innovate, create, and make products that make the world a happier and more peaceful place.

It should be our sincere hope that with the death of Steve Jobs brings to life a new generation of innovators and entrepreneurs who can challenge the status quo  and follow their creative vision, just like Steve did. In his death, we celebrate a life that was full of accomplishment and triumph. Steve serves as an inspiration to that rebel within us that inspires us to chart our own course in the choppy waters of life. May you rest in peace Steve Jobs, you will always be remembered.

Muscles cars are back! Not that they have ever gone anywhere, but muscle cars have made a resurgence in the consumer’s diet for fast cars on the cheap. The Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, and Dodge Challenger are bringing back a retro look that is leading to huge sales- in 2010, Mustang sales went up 71.1%  compared to 2009 sales figures.

Both the Camaro and Mustang have made the Consumer Reports recommended buy lists putting them amongst the top 20 best selling cars in America. The Challenger, Mustang, Camaro trio are constantly tested against one another by the major car publications like Motor Trend, trying to determine which car burns the most rubber.

To put it simply, muscle cars are fun, exciting, and affordable to anybody willing to shell the bucks for a little good old fashion American power. The issue with muscle cars is the ride.
